One of the most common questions that any resume expert gets asked regards the ideal length of a resume.People want to know how long should their resume be.   Or alternatively, how long is too long for a resume?One thing to say is there is no set rule, no defined length based on your job, experienced, age or any other factors.   But there are some solid tips to use to help you decide on the right resume length you will need to use. How long should a resume be?Times have changed due to modern technology with regards to resume length.Back when you would fax your resume to a company, there was always the worry that page two got lost, and the potential employer didn’t see all of your abilities or experience.For this reason alone, getting everything into a one-page resume was the way to go.Nowadays, the majority of the time a resume will be sent through email or uploaded via a job portal.   So there’s no need to worry about a page going astray or someone not getting all of your inf ormation.  This means it is now more acceptable and commonplace to use a two-page resume and sometimes even longer when there is a specific need to deliver more detailed information.The point of the resumeOne of the ways to think about how long your resume should be is to take a step back and look at the whole purpose of crafting a resume.What is it designed to do and what kind of length does this naturally lead to?First, keep in mind that your resume is a career marketing tool â€" it’s not an autobiography.That means you don’t need to include every single detail of your working life, college or university experience and any other information that isnt relevant to the job you are applying for.The aim of the resume is highlighting the most relevant information for the possible employer â€" your value as an employee and your credentials.   Plus it never hurts to leave something to chat about at the interview!Think of the employerThe second thing is to think of the employer.   When they advertise a position, they can receive hundreds of resumes and they need to give each a quick scan.By highlighting the most relevant information and ensuring that the hiring manager can see the most important facts about easily, you have a better chance of catching their attention. A vision board may help you crystallize your 2015 goals. Vision boards are simply visual representations of your goals. They can be digital or physical collages of images representing your targets. Some  create vision boards using poster board and images cut from magazines while other use apps or programs to paste images to a single file and use that picture as their desktop wallpaper. Vision Boards Are Tools, Not Magic Athletes have been recorded using visualization techniques since the 1970s. In fact, several studies have shown that mental visualizations with physical practice produce better performance in athletes than practice alone. Visualizing alone is not enough. If you plan to complete your makeover in January, paste the word January above the clothes. If you want a more active leadership role in your company, find a picture of someone addressing a group in a meeting and paste a picture of your face over the person speaking and write the name of the meeting (e.g., Monday Sales Meeting) above it. Locate an image of your dream organization’s office and paste a picture of yourself directly in front of it with a date next to your target start date. Be Realistic, But Stretch Each item positioned on your board is a professional goal you will attain in 365 days. If you are currently a supervisor, it is probably not realistic to paste a picture signifying your being VP of Operations within the year. However, it may be a reasonable stretch to become a manager in a more desirable department. Consider the Whole Picture Your vision board should include goals that, at the surface, may not seem entirely professional. If you aspire to a training position in your company, requiring a large amount of travel, include fitness goals on your board with the understanding that your health will impact your ability to perform. Incorporate items like meditation, healthy eating, and sleep targets on your board. Do the Work Hire a professional stylist or identify a fashion student to help you at low or no cost  with your goal of refreshing your wardrobe. You set everything aside to welcome the technician into your home or meet with other types of vendors at a designated spot. But they do not show up on time nor do they call ahead to let you know of their delayed status. You thoughtfully wait a while longer and then attempt to call or text. As patience wears thin, you leave the anticipated meeting behind in order to move forward. Result:   You research Yelp for another similar service that has top ratings. #2 Have you ever purchased something expensive that did not live up to commonplace standards? Occasionally, we are reminded of the “Friday Afternoon Car” syndrome of long ago. The term was given to those cars poorly assembled due to employees and management wanting to take off early on Friday afternoons. An awful experience of long ago, was that of opening the car door only to find the dashboard, in its entirety, on the floor. Recently, a newly delivered refrigerator spewed off chemical fumes in the freezer compartment while the refrigerator could have served as a room heater. Result:  Not having tested units increased both anger from the client, and unnecessary expense for the suppliers. #3 A sizable internet service provider would only agree to scheduling a new connection one month out. This translated to two weeks of no internet service for the entrepreneur. If it were not for the extra high speed connection, another provider would have been sought. Installation took 11 hours of the client’s time due to poor coordination of schedules among team members. Result:   The entrepreneur will forewarn colleagues to think twice. Commonalities All of these described scenarios center on the extreme lack of customer care. Wasting a client’s time and money is insignificant for some of the giant corporations. Their home office takes care of marketing and branding, so many of the remote offices have a laissez faire attitude. Problems stem from: Minimum wage for qualified employees Less people on staff than needed Reduction in employee loyalty Reduced client loyalty The end result becomes a “Buyer Beware” mentality. Solution As entrepreneurs, it is our duty to observe these indiscretions and vow to do better. We are responsible for our clients, our business and for our families. Therefore, your business depends upon serving clientele well in order to earn client loyalty. Your personal brand depends upon it. The only route is to do your best in every single capacity with which you are involved. Going Up or Going Out

Going Up or Going Out The cream always rises to the top, or so the saying goes. Todays organizations are becoming flatter and so is our world. This poses a problem for those career enthusiasts who wan to climb the corporate ladder, which has fewer rungs. Where do you go if you cant go up? Is the answer out? Sometimes yes, sometimes no, it depends on what you need. If you are not finding job satisfaction or youve reached one of the highest rungs, consider adding side projects to your plate. These could be for skill development (ie more challenging work), fulfillment, additional income, personal brand development, or other reasons. Side projects could be writing, speaking, consulting, photography, graphic arts, musicor any other interest that burns within you. Is it entrepreneurship? Kind of. Managing your career is entrepreneurial too. (visit Tom Peters blog for more about this!) On #MBAChat last night, the question was asked: Perhaps we shouldnt be thinking about sequential careers, one job leading us to the next job. What if we considered our career a mix of different jobs we hold simultaneously? I like this thought, first because I wrote it, second, because it provides insurance for WHEN we are let go from a job. Does it take time, well, yes and I think that will be the reason most wont buy into the concept. Our personal time is precious and it is highly valued by certain upcoming generations.
