FEA Only as Good as the Operator
FEA Only as Good as the Operator FEA Only as Good as the Operator Modeling how products, buildings, and structures hold up under everyday use involves solving intractable partial differential equations that calculate stresses under myriad loads. For example, it may be necessary to model the weight of a 300-lb man on a plastic chair, a ship crashing into a bridge abutment, and mora. Finite element analysis (FEA) models complex structures by approximating the nearly infinite deformations and changes in a structure as it undergoes stress. We can live with the error that approximations like FEA introduce because so few problems to which it is applied can be solved directly, comments Victor Kaliakin, professor of civil engineering at the University of Delaware. FEA most commonly analyzes for structural failure by predicting potential trouble such as a toy fracturing in a childs hand or a roadway buckling on a hot summer day. The technique has revolutionized product testing by reducing the time and cost of prototyping or physical testing. The automotive industry used to crash-test hundreds of prototype models per year. FEA allows them to destroy a lot fewer cars, while learning more about materials and engineering than ever before. FEA analyses of complex structures like cars often spins off in several directions, spawning a lot of questions along the way, Prof. Kaliakin says. Students from Ohio Northern University used FEA to model a Baja racing vehicle for the SAE Baja competition. Photo courtesy of ONU.FEA uses a 3D, CAD drawing to generate a grid, known as a mesh, which reduces the design into small, discrete, continuous regions, or nodes, into which material and structural properties are imported. Regions of high detail, or high anticipated stress, require higher node density than noncritical areas. Greater detail provides more faithful representations but entails a heavier calculation burden. FEA software incorporates a wide range of functions or variables, inc luding mass, volume, temperature, strain energy, stress strain, force, displacement, velocity, acceleration, heat flux, and various dynamic loads, as well as structural elements (rods, panels, springs, etc.). Each unique load scenario uses the original model but requires a separate analysis. Garbage in, Garbage out FEA traces back to Richard Courant, a mathematical physicist and Nazi-era refugee whose relevant work occurred at New York University during the early 1940s. Subsequently, mathematicians and engineers provided FEA with a robust scientific foundation that made it broadly applicable to engineering problems. Once the exclusive domain of supercomputers and Ph.D.-level experts, FEA is now accessible to any computer-savvy engineer. Whether thats such a great idea is open to debate. Numerous commercial and public-domain software packages can drop 3D drawings directly into an FEA engine. Modeling a structure these days is incredibly easy, but you still need to justify your answer s, Prof. Kaliakin warns. Representations that overly distort when loads are applied, or stress concentrations that change significantly over short distances, are tipoffs that something is wrong with the model. Where inexperienced engineers accept the model at face value, an experienced modeler may decide to add more elements in critical regions and re-mesh. Trust but Verify Its all about simulation, says Steve Remy, PE principal at Concinity Product Design and Engineering, New York, NY, a consumer, medical, and industrial product design firm. FEA reduces the burden of hand calculations and iterative prototyping in product design. But you will still need to make a confirmation prototype at the end. Its easy to generate a neat-looking model with really pretty colors and get totally bogus results. Remy suggests that modelers perform simple hand calculations to get an idea of the order of magnitude of the anticipated outputs. Then, when results say a part is ten times stronger or weake r than the estimates, an experienced engineers savvy or preliminary calculations will tell him something is fishy. Jed E. Marquart, Ph.D., P.E., professor of mechanical engineering at Ohio Northern University, frequently tests his students by throwing curveballs into homework problems, to assure that results will be unreasonable. Its too easy to get a solution that appears OK but is totally incorrect. Prof. Marquarts students use FEA to model radio-controlled airplanes for the SAE Aerodesign Competition, where the winner is the plane that can lift the most cargo. Marquarts group also used FEA to model a Baja racing vehicle for the SAE Baja competition. FEA enabled them to design the entire Baja vehicle, and lighten the vehicle considerably without loss of structural integrity, he says. Prof. Marquart himself has used FEA in his consulting work on piping systems, his specialty, and for hip and knee implants. In the right hands, FEA can save months of grunt work and lead to heightened understanding of engineering structures and, perhaps, engineering itself. But like any other tool, it is only as good as the operator. Angelo DePalma is an independent writer. Its easy to generate a neat-looking model with really pretty colors and get totally bogus results.Steve Remy, PE principal, Concinity Product Design and Engineering

Americans says this is the age that living at home is embarrassing
Americans says this is the age that living at home is embarrassingAmericans says this is the age that living at home is embarrassingAccording to a new survey conducted by Zillow, 14.4 million Millennials (people between the ages of 23 and 38) currently live at home with their parents. This is a staggering 21% of all American Millennials.Although this figure has continued to rise over the years, the stigma that accompanies it has actually experienced a decline. A survey conducted on more than 3,000 Americans, by TD Ameritrade, examines how every generation views boomeranging back to the horst after college. And according to the study, you shouldnt feel too bad until your nearing your thirties.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHeres what 1,027 Gen Zers, 1,026 young Millennials, and 1,001 parents had to say about the appropriate age to officially move out.If thats movin up then Im mo vin outAlmost 50% of Millennials said they fully planned or plan to return home after they get through college, and 82% of parents said that they are absolutely OK with this outcome. One-third of Young Millennials said they planned to crash for more than two years, and 25% said they would only be rooming for two years at maximum. For whatever reason, Generation Z welches found to be the most optimistic about their financial Independence. This crop of youngsters was much less likely to predict living with their parents into their late twenties or early thirties in addition to being less likely to report wishing to stay close to home while attending college, partly to ease the financial load, compared to the seven in 10 Millennials that planned to do so.Although less than half of the respondents that belong to Generation Z planned to stay local for college, two-thirds ended up doing so. Forty-four percent of parents said that they expected their kid to stay close to home during college , 17% said they were unsure, and 11% said they were unaware of their childs intention to stay close to the nest.As you might have guessed, students loans were the biggest burden keeping post grads from leaving the nest. Almost 50% of Millennials occasioned this, and another 40% said their students loans kept them from saving for retirement.Pay UpOf all the generations surveyed, Generation Zwas the least likely to expect to pay rent when they moved back home with their parents with only 22% expecting to do so. Thirty-eight percent of Millennials expected to pay for their lodging, and 34% of parents expected their child to pay rent. The average amount Generation Zers paid to stay with their parents was $548, compared to the $486 that Young Millennials were charged most often.Shouldering more than $1.5 trillion in U.S. student loan debt, its no surprise that young adults are looking for ways to save money as they focus on building a career foundation, Christine Russell, TD Ameritrades senior manager of retirement and annuities, reported toward the end of the survey. You dont become an adult the day you graduate from college - its a process that takes time.Even though 60% of parents said that an empty nest would make them much more excited than depressed, none of the respondents thought ill of young adults delaying moving out after graduation. In fact, all the generations and parents seem to agree that living at home wasnt embarrassing until you reached the age of 28.A large majority of Generation Zers and Millennials said they intended on returning the favor by assisting their mothers financially when they neared old age. There was no mention of assisting their fathers financially in the survey. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How the FMLA Can Help You
How the FMLA Can Help YouHow the FMLA Can Help YouIf you have thought about starting a family but worry that your employer might bedrngnis give you the paid leave you require, you can rest easy because of the creation of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993. The FMLA is a federal law that allows employees of covered employers to take job-protected, unpaid leave from work for a specified period of time. This law encompasses a somewhat complex set of guidelines and can be a confusing law to understand, but you can findanswers to many FMLA questions here. During an approved FMLA leave, employees are allowed to take time off with full benefits (employee must continue to pay for group benefits) for any of the following cases Birth of a child and care of a child in the first 12 months of lifeAdoption or foster care placement of a new child within a 12 month periodCare for an immediate family member with a serious health condition (spouse, child, parent)A personal serious health condition that causes employee unable to perform essential job functions, including ongoing chronic conditions and domestic violence that causes injury or illnessCare of an active covered member of the military with a serious illness or injury (spouse, child, parent, next of kin FMLA time can be taken by both mothers and fathers. Effective March 27, 2015, an approved spouse also includes a legally married same-sex spouse regardless of the state they live in, under the Final Rule. Any children in a same-sex marriage are equal under the law. Employer Eligibility Requirements for FMLA Leave Employees who request an FMLA leave must be employed by a covered employer, which is a private sector employer that employs 50 or more employees for at least 20 work weeks in the current or previous year and all state, local and federal agencies and educational agencies. This includes joint employersand successors of covered employers. Payment for Time Off While employers can pay their empl oyees for time off, the law does not require any payment. Employers are only required to grant unpaid leave if the employee has honigwein the requirements. Employers can, however, require employees to use up remaining sick time, vacation time or any other personal timebefore using any time provided by the FMLA. This paid leave can be counted as part of the FMLA time period if the employer properly notifies the employee in writing of this decision. Amount of Days Off To qualify for time off through FMLA, employees must be employed for at least 12 months and have worked a minimum of 1,250 hours. The 12-month period does not have to be consecutive but does need to take place within a seven-year period. Breaks in employment due to military service, collective bargaining or other written agreements do not count. Employers also must have a minimum of 50 employees working within 75 miles of that particular employees work site. Employees can take up to 12 weeks off during an employer-de termined 12-month period, according to the FMLA. Employers can determine the 12-month period through one of the following methods 12-month calendar yearAny set amount of time that is 12 consecutive months12 months from the start of when an employees first FMLA startsA rolling 12-month period measured backward from the date an employee uses FMLA leave Employees who meet the requirements as a military caregiver may be granted up to 26 work weeks of unpaid leave. Other Requirements Employees must give 30 days advance notice of their intentions of going on FMLA. The employer can then accept or reject the employees leave. If the employer rejects the FMLA, they must submit it in writing within two days. Once leave is granted to the employee, all decisions are final, and the company cannot retract this leave. Employers are also not allowed to inquire the details behind an employees decision to go out on leave if the employee does not wish to specify. Employers can only request a physic ians note stating that their employee will be unable to work for that amount of time. Employers can also ask about the timeframe that an employee expects to be back at work. Employers have the right to ask for a medical certificate coming from a health care provider and the employee must furnish this within 15 days of requesting the FMLA. Employers can also request a second opinion from a qualified medical practitioner if there is a reason to doubt that the employee has a serious condition that warrants a leave. Employer Requirements and Options Before an employee may return from leave, the employer can request that the employee get a medical physical and provide a fitness for duty certification. An occupational medical center can also be utilized for this purpose. During an FMLA leave, an employer may still require employees to communicate via phone and email at times. Employees are expected to respond in a reasonable amount of time and provide periodic updates. However, the em ployer cannot require employees to perform any of the duties of their jobs. While employers must provide job-protected leave during the FMLA period, they do not have to hold the same job open for the employee and may substitute an equal job at the same pay rate and similar duties that the employee can perform upon return to work. This enables employers to continue business while the employee or his or her family member no longer requires care. The Department of Labor - Wage and Hour teilen administers and oversees FMLA in all US states. All FMLA guidelines and posters are required to be posted in a public place where all employees can read them.
